Lazy River Vineyard

“These wines are exceptionally elegant editions of Pinot Noir with smooth satiny textures, attractive overlays of red berry fruit, floral aromas and peppery spice, and intensity without weight”

- John Winthrop Haeger, Pacific Pinot Noir

The switch from commercial construction to the wine business, utilized similar skills for Ned Lumpkin - accurate cost analysis, comfort with risk and a commitment to quality. He was president of Lumpkin Construction for 30 years, completing a body of work throughout the State of Washington ranging from high tech to commercial to academic. In 2000 he “retired” to begin Lazy River Vineyard. It's difficult to keep up with Ned... for many years he sailed competitively and currently, he participates in the master’s ski racing program in Sun Valley, ID. He is a graduate in Economics from the University of Washington.

By profession Kirsten Lumpkin is a skilled writer and has been a long time supporter of education. She has been on the boards of primary and secondary schools and currently sits on the College Board for the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington. She has also managed commercial real estate. A descendent of Oregon homesteaders, she wryly notes that her family has been farming in Oregon off and on since 1885. Kirsten is an avid gardener and enjoys hitting the slopes with Ned.

Only a few miles from the little town of Yamhill, lies their family vineyard. From the top of the hill one looks down to the mixed terrain, 146 acres of interlocking puzzle pieces of woods, rolling meadows, vines and ponds. The land is separated north from south by a meandering small river, which by August hardly moves. Currently, there are 30 acres of Pinot Noir, three acres of Pinot Gris and three acres of Riesling planted. The Lumpkin Family sells fruit to recognized producers such as: Andrew Rich, Hamacher, Panther Creek and Ponzi. They also produce their own Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling under their own label, Lazy River Vineyard, which is crafted by Winemaker Eric Hamacher.

In 2000, the Lumpkins also partnered with Eric and his wife Luisa Ponzi, to break ground on The Carlton Winemakers Studio. The four envisioned a pioneering project, a sustainable facility built to accommodate the needs of small, high-end winemakers.
