The Carlton Winemakers Studio
Fennwood
The Hampton family has deep roots in Oregon, grounded in a long-standing respect for the land and a commitment to responsible land management.
For decades, they’ve been known for their work in sustainable forestry. In 2016, third-generation siblings Jamey, Elizabeth, and David Hampton expanded their focus by planting Tall Tree Vineyard near Monmouth, Oregon. This step marked a natural extension of their connection to the land and introduced them to the world of winemaking.
In 2018, the Hamptons purchased Fennwood Vineyard, a marine sedimentary site along the southeast edge of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. This 58-acre vineyard, planted to both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, is one of the most unique vineyards in Oregon. Established in 2007 by David Adelsheim and Eugenia Keegan, the original blocks were laid out to follow the contours of the hillside, creating a mosaic of asymmetric blocks rather than the more typical rectangular shapes which make farming more manageable.
Winemaking at Fennwood is led by Mel Liebeck, who produces wines that reflect the character of the vineyard—balanced, expressive, and true to place. The first year of production includes two Pinot Noirs: an Estate bottling and “Espoir,” which is a blend of the best barrels of the vintage. Future plans include a Chardonnay from the estate as well as a new methode champenoise sparkling wine.
The Hampton family acquired The Carlton Winemakers Studio in 2021. For the Hamptons, who value creativity and community, it was a natural fit. Through their work with Fennwood Vineyard, Fennwood Wines, and The Studio, the Hamptons are building on their family’s tradition of stewardship, while contributing to Oregon’s evolving wine community.
